Terra Blevins

I'm an assistant professor in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University, where I lead the LiLaC Lab. Check out our lab website to see what we've been working on!

My research focuses on linguistic analysis of NLP models and multilingual NLP, as well as how we can use analysis insights to build better language technologies, particularly for languages other than English. Recently, this has included work on analyzing the linguistic preferences of current language model architectures and building custom multilingual architectures to support low-resource language families. I'm also interested in the linguistic properties of language models more generally, and how these compare to and interact with human language use.

Before I joined Northeastern, I was a postdoctoral researcher in the Vienna NLP group at the University of Vienna. I completed my Ph.D. in the Natural Language Processing group at the University of Washington, where I was advised by Luke Zettlemoyer. I also worked as a visiting researcher at Facebook AI Research (FAIR). I graduated from Columbia University with a BA in Computer Science where I worked with Kathy McKeown.
